From James Altucher, editor, The Altucher Report: Andy Weir first published The Martian as a serial—released one chapter at a time—on his website. He had only a few thousand readers.
He started writing and researching it in 2009. After everyone rejected it, he published the book himself in 2011. (It was his first published book, but he’d been writing for years. That’s how it goes…)
The book became so popular—selling 35,000 copies in three months—Random House bought it. It republished the book in 2014. It quickly landed on every best-seller list.
Ridley Scott then scooped up the movie rights. Matt Damon is now starring in the film. (It opened last weekend to $55 million at the box office.)
