The Caterpillar 793F-CMD “haul truck” is one of the largest dump trucks in the world. It’s over two stories tall. It weighs up to 375,000 pounds. And it can haul 250 tons of material per load.

And now… it’s driverless.

The Solomon iron mine in western Australia owns six of these gargantuan haul trucks. Each operates under autonomous computer control.

Some miners feared accidents would occur without a human behind wheel. But as one engineer notes, “The stop points are precise… to the centimeter.” No accidents have happened. Watch these incredible robotic trucks in action below.

If you think driverless vehicles are limited to some dusty wastes in the Outback… think again. NBC News reports a self-driving car just made the first coast-to-coast trip across the United States. It drove 3,400 miles over 11 states in nine days.

And German carmaker Daimler has now tested autonomous semi trucks on the Autobahn. They cruise by cars at over 50 mph, loaded to maximum capacity.

None of this should surprise regular Daily readers. They know autonomous vehicles are the future of transportation.

And none of it would be possible without the “Internet of Things” (IoT).

The Internet of Things is the largest mega trend we’ll ever see in our lifetimes. It’s also known as “machine-to-machine” communication. This year, the Internet of Things will overtake the Internet of smartphones, tablets, and PCs market—in terms of number of devices—combined.

And by 2018, it’ll be more than twice its current size.

If you haven’t read Tom’s recent coverage of the IoT in the April 8 Daily, I urge you to do so now. Early investors in this trend stand to make fortunes.
