Smart Shelves

“It has the potential to reinvent brick-and-mortar retailing…”

USA Today reports Kroger—the largest supermarket chain in America—is now testing the “smart shelf.”

The digital shelves display prices, nutrition information, coupons, and eye-catching videos.

But that’s just the beginning…

The real power lies in the shelves’ interaction with shoppers’ mobile devices.

First, you share your shopping list with the store… Then, the shelves alert you when you’re passing by your desired items. The shelves share coupons and even remind you if you forgot an item on your list (and give you directions to find it).

Regular Daily readers know smart shelves are just another example of the Internet of Things (IoT) at work. The IoT is a $19 trillion mega trend that’ll “chip” all physical objects in the world. The chipped objects—like the items on Kroger’s smart shelves—then “talk” to each other (and you) via wireless Internet connections.

Instead of using the Internet on a computer, humans will soon live “inside” the Internet of Things itself.
