Eighty million U.S. jobs are at risk of automation…

That’s according to the Bank of England’s chief economist. He made the projection in a recent speech.

The Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) reports the U.S. now has about 143 million (non-farm) workers employed. That means 56% of the employed population stand to lose their jobs in the years ahead.

As you can see below, the jobs at greatest “automation risk” tend to lie on the low end of the wage scale.

The news won’t surprise regular Daily readers. We’ve discussed the coming “robocalypse” several times in these pages.

Remember, this displacement won’t happen all at once. And new human jobs—ones we can’t yet imagine—will pop up to fill the void (for example, “social media managers” didn’t exist 10 years ago).

Society grows wealthier overall as automation relieves humans of greater amounts of tedium. But prepare now. If your occupation lies in the middle or right of the chart above, consider making a change… before automation forces a change on you.
